Compass

A program for analyzing and countering digital threats and online abuse.

compassfraud.pl

Compass develops tools that help people recognize manipulation, scams and information threats and make safer decisions in the digital world.

Before you trust it, check it.

Compass is a social and technology project developed by GoodWay Foundation to increase resilience to manipulation, digital fraud and information threats.

The first component is an intelligent message analyzer that helps users assess suspicious text messages, emails, messenger chats and online offers.

The system analyzes the submitted text, identifies features common to manipulation and indicates the level of risk together with recommended actions.

Each submission also helps build an anonymous knowledge base of current fraud methods, scams and manipulative tactics appearing online.

In later stages Compass will grow into a platform for digital education, threat analysis, social research and information resilience.

Our goal is to create a place that helps people make safer decisions in a world of information, technology and communication.

The most common scams people come to us with

Parcel surcharge text message

“Your parcel is waiting, pay a PLN 1.99 surcharge.” The link leads to a fake payment page that captures card details or access to the account.

BLIK code “from a friend”

Someone writes from a friend’s messenger account and asks for a BLIK code “just for a moment”. The friend’s account has been taken over.

“Grandchild” and “police officer” scams

A phone call to an older person: a grandchild needs money, or the “police” ask for help catching criminals. The real police never ask anyone to hand over money.

Fake buyer on classified ads

A “buyer” sends a link “to receive the payment” or for “safe delivery”. The page looks like a classifieds site or a courier company, but it is used to steal card details.

Fake bank consultant

The “security department” calls and tells you to transfer money to a “safe account” or to install an app. A bank never does this.

“Risk-free” investments

Ads featuring well-known faces promise quick profits. After you pay, contact breaks off.

How Compass works

You paste a suspicious message — a text message, an e-mail, a messenger message or the text of an ad. Compass checks whether it contains typical signs of fraud: time pressure, a request for data or money, a suspicious link, impersonation of a well-known company. It shows what is worrying, assesses the level of risk and suggests what to do. Do not paste passwords, card numbers or codes — they are not needed for the check.

Clicked a suspicious link or gave away your details? Act right away

  1. Call your bank (the number on your card or in the app) and block your card or access to your account.
  2. Change your passwords — first for e-mail and online banking, then for other services.
  3. Keep the evidence: screenshots, the phone number, the content of the message.
  4. Report the fraud — see below.
  5. If you lost money, report it to the police.

Where to report fraud

  • A suspicious text message — forward it free of charge to 8080 (CERT Polska).
  • A fake website or message — report it at incydent.cert.pl.
  • Loss of money — your bank and the police (in an emergency, 112).

Why we do this

Every report in Compass goes — anonymously — into a knowledge base of new fraud methods. This way warnings can reach people faster, before more people lose money. Compass is a GoodWay Foundation program and it is free.
